Why Is Monofloral Manuka Honey Considered To Be Rare? - PURITI

There are many reasons whymonofloral Manuka honey is so sought-after around the world, but the rarity of this gift of nature makes it all the more exciting. PURITI Manuka honey does not arrive in the jar by chance; there areextensive measures and expertise involved to ensure that we provide our customers with only the best quality Manuka honey.

As a way of encapsulating the special nature of pure Manuka honey, this blog will showcase what exactly makes 100% pure New Zealand Manuka honey one of the rarest honey varieties on Earth.

Can You Harvest Raw Manuka Honey Anywhere In The World?

Good luck trying, as Manuka honey is only produced with the nectar of the Manuka flower - which is native to New Zealand. While there are cousins of this species found in Australia, there is a unique DNA marker that is tested for when certifying pure Manuka honey. This testing is part of the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) method of validating this true New Zealand product.

Alongside the DNA test, the New Zealand Government (which runs MPI) has set rigorous standards for the chemical composition of Manuka honey also. Not only are these strict levels in place for monofloral Manuka honey, but the multifloral Manuka honey is also expected to reach a certain level of purity - albeit less than monofloral, of course.

For our Manuka honey to reach all of these certifications, we must ensure that all jarred honey is up to an exquisite standard - which is exactly what we do.

How Is Monofloral Manuka Honey Harvested?

There is a very specific process that is undertaken to ensure the harvesting of pure monofloral Manuka honey.

As you can imagine, if the honey is virtually entirely from one flower’s nectar, there needs to be a lot of oversight to ensure purity. Our beekeepers have had many years of experience with harvesting Manuka honey - their expertise in location scouting and bee handling makes them the best in the business.

Without harming the bees, our beekeepers will use their tools to carefully extract the honey from their hives. The hives are strategically positioned in areas that maximise the bees’ scope for sourcing Manuka nectar. Manuka flowers are a very delicate species that bloom as little as six weeks a year, this makes harvesting a very integral and volatile period of the year. As a result, PURITI’s beekeepers must constantly be on their A-game.

Additionally, Manuka flowers are exceptionally sensitive to environmental factors. They have been known to become more prevalent in areas with no people or disturbances around, which is why some of our most fruitful Manuka bushes are in the most remote locations and some of which are only accessible by helicopter.

But Pure Manuka Honey Still Looks Like A Lot Of Other Honey?

From a physical perspective, there is a great deal of similarities between conventional and rare Manuka honey. You can find multifloral Manuka honey that looks nearly identical to Manuka honey. Even non-Manuka honey can be creamed to a similar consistency to make it seem almost identical.

With pure monofloral Manuka honey, the microscopic ingredients are what makes it most unique. This is why having visible certification and validation stamps on the jar is so important. PURITI goes out of way to ensure all of our packaging is inclusive of every necessary grade that our customers are looking for. These grades include:

    • UMF grade
    • MGO concentration
    • Made in New Zealand
    • Kosher
