How To Read The Label For PURITI Mānuka Honey - PURITI

Perhaps this is your first experience with PURITI Mānuka honey, and you’d like to know exactly what the numbers and phrases mean. Although it may seem like there is a secret code for finding the best Mānuka honey, a lot of the imagery on the label is very straightforward.

This article will launch your understanding of Mānuka honey to a level where you’ll feel confident in buying the right Mānuka honey. There are several variations of Mānuka honey that range in potency. Depending on your desired use, you may wish to purchase gentler or more potent forms of raw Mānuka honey.

    What Does ‘Single Origin’ Mean?

One of the critical features of all PURITI Mānuka honey jars is the “single origin” label on the front. This refers to the nectar used to make each jar. Monofloral Mānuka honey is used to describe 100% pure New Zealand Mānuka honey from one source.

Multifloral Mānuka honey is a variant whereby the nectar of other flower species has also been mixed. Although multifloral forms can still provide a delicious taste, they will not contain high concentrations of the unique Mānuka honey biochemical ingredients.

    What Is MGO?

Every jar of PURITI of Mānuka honey will show the methylglyoxal (MGO) level on a black square near the lid. This number is incredibly sought after by frequent Mānuka honey purchasers as it indicates the concentration of this unique ingredient.

Why does MGO matter? It was first discovered in 1981 by Peter Molan, a distinguished New Zealand biochemist and was subsequently reported to contain unique antibacterial properties. However, a majority of studies have only shown this antibacterial activity within in-vitro or artificial environments. Scientists continue to explore the opportunity for MGO to have a place within modern medicine.

Fans across the world are constantly on the search for monofloral Mānuka honey that is loaded with MGO. Typically speaking, the minimum amount of MGO found within monofloral UMF™ Mānuka honey is 80mg/kg. Furthermore, this number can go as high as 1717mg/kg.Exploring the range of MGO is a great way of figuring out which concentration works best for you.

    What Is UMF™?

Above the black square for MGO will be a golden square with a number on it. This is the Unique Mānuka Factor (UMF™) grade, also known as the gold standard of Mānuka honey purity. Ranked between UMF™ 5+ and UMF™ 32, this comprehensive grading system considers all crucial factors determining raw monofloral Mānuka honey.

This is the only standard that independently assures the quality of New Zealand Mānuka honey so consumers worldwide can be confident in the strength, potency and purity of each jar. Each Mānuka honey product that is certified with UMF™ has gone through rigorous testing via the most stringent methods of the Unique Mānuka Factor Honey Association (UMF™HA).

Note that while some honey buyers are okay with just knowing the MGO, UMF™ encompasses MGO plus three other key ingredients that contribute to the genuine nature of Mānuka honey:

    1. Leptosperin - DNA marker for genuine Mānuka honey
    2. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) - the natural precursor to MGO
    3. Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) - a heat-sensitive chemical that ensures no
