Mānuka Honey: Tested & Certified to Higher Standards

In a world filled with countless honey options, New Zealand Mānuka honey stands out as a true, golden gift from nature. But with its rising popularity, so too comes the need for unwavering trust and transparency.

At PURITI, we understand that you’re not just buying honey; you’re investing in purity, quality and authenticity. This is our promise to you, a promise that’s backed by an extensive system of testing and certifications that go above and beyond every single standard that’s set by the Government and our industry.

We believe that true purity isn’t found on a label - it’s discovered within the product itself. It’s a journey that begins in the pristine, isolated forests of New Zealand and ends with a jar of pure Mānuka honey that’s exactly as nature intended.

    Raw. Untouched. Pure.

Here’s a look at how we ensure our New Zealand Mānuka honey is kept to the highest possible standard.

The UMF Advantage: The Gold Standard in Mānuka

The UMF (Unique Mānuka Factor) Honey Association is globally recognised as the gold standard for pure Mānuka honey quality. As a UMF licensee (#2888), we don’t just meet the requirements - we embrace and exceed them.

The UMF mark guarantees that our honey has been independently tested for four key markers that prove its purity and potency:

Methylglyoxal (MGO):This is the primary antibacterial compound in tested Mānuka honey. While some brands only test for MGO, the UMF™ mark ensures that MGO is naturally occurring and not added synthetically. We always ensure our MGO levels are higher than the minimum requirements for each UMF™ grade, so you’ll get more of the good stuff in every spoonful.

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA): This naturally occurring compound is found in the nectar of the Mānuka flower and converts into MGO over time. Its presence is a sign of genuine, high-quality Mānuka honey.

Leptosperin: This is a unique natural compound found exclusively in pure Mānuka honey. It’s an excellent marker of authenticity because it is nearly impossible to reproduce synthetically.

Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF): This compound is a freshness indicator. High levels of HMF can signal that honey has been overheated or stored improperly, which can degrade its quality. We make sure that our honey is fresh and unprocessed, with HMF levels far below the industry standard.

By testing for all four markers, the UMF certification provides a complete picture of the honey’s quality, potency and authenticity, giving you the confidence that what’s in our jars is the real deal.

    Beyond the UMF Mark

Our commitment to purity doesn’t stop there. We also holda number of other key certifications, including the following:

    • NZ FernMark: This license confirms that our brand truly reflects the essence ofNew ZealandMānuka honey.

    • Glyphosate - Residue Free: This certification guarantees our honey has zero glyphosate residue down to government-recognised limits. We have a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy for this herbicide to ensure your wellbeing.

    • SQF (Safe Quality Food): We are one of only a few New Zealand honey producers to achieve this internationally recognised food quality standard, which covers everything from farm to shelf.

    • HALAL NZ and Vegetarian Society Approved: These certifications demonstrate our commitment to meeting the dietary and ethical needs of our diverse consumers, found in many of our products.

The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has a government-set scientific definition for Mānuka honey, which is a fantastic step forward for the industry. It requires honey to be tested for four chemical markers and a DNA marker, in order for it to be properly classified as Mānuka honey.

This does a great deal to prevent counterfeit Mānuka honey from being sold on the market, helping discerning customers to feel reassured they’re buying the true product.

However, at PURITI, we refuse to just meet the standard. We voluntarily apply stricter export-level standardsto every jar of Mānuka honey we produce, including those sold right here in New Zealand, where the law doesn’t already require it.

Our standards can be anywhere between 10% and 100% higher than the MPI’s export regulations. This means that every jar of certified Mānuka honey is tangibly purer, more authentic and more potent regardless of where in the world it’s sold.

It’s our way of raising the bar for the entire Mānuka honey industry.

From the Hive to the Jar: A Culture of Quality

Our commitment to quality is ingrained in every step of the process, from the bee apiaries to the final product on the shelf. Our trusted supplier, Midlands, shares our philosophy of excellence. Theirdedicated, in-house compliance team conducts regular audits, tests and inspections at every stage of production.

Midlands also holds their own significant certifications, including SQC Level 3, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and RMP (Risk Management Programme) certifications, which demonstrate their commitment ot the highest food safety and quality management standards.

This meticulous approach ensures that every batch of honey is carefully handled and tested for the key UMF markets and other quality attributes before it’s even considered for a PURITI jar. It’s this rigorous, farm-to-jar process that guarantees the superior quality of over PURITI product.

We wanted to make our packaging so technically complex and expensive to copy that it would be virtually impossible for counterfeiters to replicate. The measures are subtle, but intentional, designed to give you peace of mind that what you’re holding is indeed the real deal.
